Window installation

Window Installation Options and Process

The right installation method depends on the condition of the existing opening. Compare retrofit, brick-to-brick, and stud-to-stud replacement, then see what happens from measurement to cleanup.

Assessment first

The existing opening shapes the scope

The frame condition, wall construction, and surrounding finishes help determine what should remain and what should be replaced.

Installation methods

Retrofit, brick-to-brick and stud-to-stud

The three terms describe how much of the existing window assembly is removed. An inspection of the opening determines which approach fits the project.

Method 01

Retrofit installation

The replacement window fits inside sound existing frame components that remain in place.

Existing frame
Suitable existing frame components remain
Exterior finish
Existing exterior finish is generally retained where suitable.

Method 02

Brick-to-brick installation

The old window and frame are removed to the rough opening before the new unit and exterior trim are installed.

Existing frame
Existing window is removed to the assessed opening
Exterior finish
New exterior finishing and brickmould are scoped for the opening.

Method 03

Stud-to-stud installation

Interior finishes are opened far enough to expose the wall framing so the surrounding assembly can be repaired or rebuilt as needed.

Existing frame
Existing window is removed to the assessed opening
Exterior finish
Exterior finishing is planned around the existing brick, siding, flashing, and trim at the opening.

Names can be used differently across the industry. The written project scope should state what is retained, removed, insulated and finished at the opening.

What to expect

How window replacement works

Each project follows the same broad path, although ordering and installation timing varies by product and site conditions.

  1. Talk through the project

Tell us which windows you want to replace, how each room is used, and what matters most to you.

  2. Measure and inspect

We review the opening size, frame condition, access, and nearby interior and exterior finishes.

  3. Choose the window and method

The window configuration and installation method are matched to the opening and the work required.

  4. Order and prepare

We review the window details before ordering and plan the work around the conditions at your home.

  5. Installation

The crew removes or retains the agreed frame components, installs the new window, and completes the included finishing work.

  6. Inspect, clean up, and review

We review the completed work and window operation, clean the work area, and answer care or follow-up questions.

Prepare for the work

A practical pre-installation checklist

A little preparation helps the crew reach the openings safely and protect the surrounding rooms. We’ll explain what to move or prepare before installation day.

Confirm access

Identify furniture, window coverings or outdoor items that may affect safe access to the openings.

Protect nearby areas

Clarify which protection is included and which personal or fragile items should be moved before work begins.

Review site conditions

Discuss parking, entry, pets, alarms and other site details that affect the work area or handoff.

Keep decisions together

Review the chosen window style, glass, finish, and opening details before installation day.

Choose the complete window

Match installation with product choices

Window style, glass, colours, and finishing details should be considered together with the opening and installation method.

Compare window styles

Review operation, ventilation, fixed and operable choices, suitable uses and cleaning access.

Explore the Windows hub

Review options and finishes
